How important is good luck and timing in business? There are actually multiple companies that achieved success in business because it had either or both of them. Here are some good examples:
1. Twitter You’ve probably heard of Twitter but you might be surprised that one of the co-founders had “luck” that resulted in success in business. Twitter has become one of the top social networks on the Internet and is famous for Twitter posts known as Tweets. However, Twitter co-founder Evan Williams didn’t have success with the podcasting platform Odeo. That was due to Apple launching a podcast section for the iTunes stores. Odeo folded soon after that. Williams later helped to launch Twitter. 2. Dyson You might have heard of Dyson vacuum cleaners but might not know the story about how the company was launched. It involved James Dyson and his success in business. In fact, it took him 15 years and 100% of his savings to develop a bagless prototype that was functional. In fact, Dyson developed over 120 prototypes before he had “luck” with one that worked. However, it wasn’t really lucky because he kept developing new prototypes until he built one that worked. 3. Sony Akio Morita was the founder of Sony. The company has become one of the most successful tech companies in the world. However, the company wasn’t always successful and its story is quite interesting. The first Sony product was actually a rice cooker. A major issue was that the machine burned rice, which is a result you wouldn’t want for such appliances. However, the company became “lucky” by developing many other products that became successful. That includes the PlayStation consoles that have become the industry’s top-selling models. 4. Hershey You’ve probably heard of Hershey since it’s one of the most famous chocolate companies in the world. However, you might not know the story of Milton Hershey. He was actually fired from his apprentice job with a printer. Hershey actually failed three times when trying to launch a candy company. However, he didn’t stop trying to achieve success in business. So in a sense, it could be said that he made his own luck. Even though the previous companies failed Hershey kept trying to succeed. He achieved that when he launched the Hershey Company. The company is now famous for its chocolate bars, Hershey kisses, and several other products. 5. The Huffington Post The site has become one of the most popular news sites. However, the founder Arianna Huffington had some problems when she was starting out. She struggled to get people to read her writings. In fact, her second book was rejected by over 30 publishers. However, Huffington kept trying and became “lucky” with The Huffington Post. It’s become one of the most popular sites on the Internet. The news aggregator/blog has become quite successful. It was founded in 2005 but has achieved success in business and now is the umbrella company Verizon. These are some of the examples of success in business that involved companies that became “lucky” after struggling in the past.
